Did you know that A&E admissions go up on the night of a full moon? Nurses even swap shifts to avoid the influx of werewolves.

The moon is fascinating to us. Lunatics are made by it. The sea dances to its tune. We've even sent rockets up to let people stand on it, and then - well - come back again.

So the idea of seeing a big red one in the sky last night proved too much. Twitter has been flooded with photos!

But of grainy orange dots. Not the glowing orbs of celestial phenomenon; this rare, eerie spectacle of majesty. But grainy orange dots. Which can be recreated by squinting at the standby light on your telly.

Camera phones, affordable digital SLRs and GoPros have put the possibility of outstanding photography in the hands of us all. But 'point and shoot' is 'hit and miss'.
