I have been asked many times by friends and clients alike, What is Twitter, should I be using it and should my business?
Twitter's own explanation is simple:
Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
But Twitter is a lot more than that... Not only can Twitter keep you informed about what friends and family are up to in short microblogs, but it is also a great tool for businesses. You can broadcast your company's latest news and blog posts, while interacting with your clients. Before if you had a message to get out into the world, you would tell a work college who might pass it on to another and it the news slowly spread around. Now with Twitter you post out a tweet, and your followers retweet to their followers, who may start following you, or retweet again to their followers. Within a matter of minutes you can reach thousdands of potential clients.
You can even use Twitter for an internal collaboration and group communication on current projects.
All posts to Twitter are called 'Tweets' and are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each of your followers, and in the Twitter public timeline (unless you disable this in your account settings.) Twitter is not just a website based service, you can also use your mobile phone to send SMS's to twitter, or use a number of the different applications on your iphone such as Tweetie or our personal favourite tweetbot.
